Car rental in Mexico is a little bit challenging because of the insurance. Fortunately , vehicle rental companies are starting to make their sites more user friendly and transparent, but only if you understand the essentials. Last time we went to the Nuevo Vallarta Grand Luxxe, we rented an automobile from Alamo and it was easy and low-cost. Even though it seems a little ironic to lease from ALAMO in MEXICO, it worked well, so we will describe to you how we did it.
Liability Insurance is required in Mexico by law. Pretty much all rental companies have a minimal amount of liability insurance included. However, collision damage waiver is extra and expensive. If you have a signature Visa card or other card with vehicle rental protection, you can decline this insurance as long as you pay with your card.
In the last couple of years, the online process has become even more straightforward. You can pick your dates, decide if you want additional liability, and you can entirely avoid CDW. You don’t have to pay ahead, but I have actually heard you should print a copy of your online verification, so there is no concern about the rate. It is also most likely a great concept to print a copy of your charge card policy on automobile rental (although I don’t think we typically remember to do that).
They will always attempt to tell you that you need even more insurance. The Visa Signature covers every nation other than Ireland and Israel !! Oh and most all car rentals have a benefit deal where you can bring the vehicle back empty and they charge you for the tank with a lesser rate per gallon. This is almost never a bargain, we actually did the math. Do it only if you want to pay extra for convenience.
Lastly, if you do not desire an entire week rental, it may be much better to work out at your resort or at the rental workplace. Last fall at the Mayan Resort in Riviera Maya, we were provided (after negotiating) three days for the price of 2. We made use of our charge card insurance and ended up paying $20 a day. A good rate for the week appears to be about $200 for a compact vehicle (one size up from economy) We were able to get 4 individuals, 4 suitcases and a couple of carry ons in without too much difficulty.
